چکیده

Introduction: Basic knowledge about the composition and structure of the Moon was provided by the space missions of the USSR (Luna since 1959) and USA (Ranger and Surveyor since 1964). In particular Apollo missions 11 to 17 (1969-1972) with ca. 2200 samples (380 kg) gave new highlights and understandings for the geological research of our neighbor. Additional material was sampled by the Russian space missions Luna 16, 20 and 24 between 1971 and 1976 (Figs. 1,2). Development and testing of certain advanced analytical techniques (small samples, limited material, etc.) were important purposes for the further mineralogical investigations of the lunar samples.

Grain-scale mechanical properties of lunar plagioclase and its simulant: Initial experimental findings and modeling implications

Preparations for lunar missions involve the extensive use of simulants of lunar surface materials. Since many planned operations engage the mechanical properties of the regolith, it is of utmost importance to assure that the simulants adequately represent the engineering properties of actual lunar materials. To address this critical issue, we are conducting an experimental and modeling effort t...

Shape and Size Relationship of Several Lunar Dusts: Preliminary Results

Introduction: Before establishing a human outpost on the Moon, numerous problems associated with lunar dust must be addressed and mitigated [1, 2]. The deleterious nature of lunar dusts was experienced during all Apollo missions. Lunar dusts (brought in on dirty spacesuits and boots) contaminated the atmosphere in the lunar module and irritated the eyes, sinuses, and throats of the astronauts [...

Microscale distribution and behavior of Th, REE, and K during regolith formation processes on the Moon: Implications for remote sensing of the surfaces of airless planetary bodies

Introduction: Remotely sensed geochemical data provide extremely valuable information concerning the global distribution of elements on a planetary surface, and are valuable in the identification of major crustal terranes. Planetary geochemical maps of the Moon and Mars for several elements such as Th, rare earth elements (REE), K, and Fe have been or are currently being prepared and have yield...

Biological contamination studies of lunar landing sites: implications for future planetary protection and life detection on the Moon and Mars

Chemical and microbiological studies of the impact of terrestrial contamination of the lunar surface during the Apollo missions could provide valuable data to help refine future Mars surface exploration plans and planetary protection requirements for a human mission to Mars. NASA and ESA have outlined new visions for solar system exploration that will include a series of lunar robotic missions ...

Remote Chemical Sensing Using Nuclear Spectroscopy

Nuclear spectroscopy techniques are used to determine the elemental composition of planetary surfaces and atmospheres. Radiation, including gamma rays and neutrons, is produced steadily by cosmic ray bombardment of the surfaces and atmospheres of planetary bodies and by the decay of radionuclides within the solid surface. The leakage flux of gamma rays and neutrons contains information about th...
